CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM RELEASES COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH REPORT

The Cumberland County Board of Education will review the coordinated school health report in their meeting tomorrow night (Thursday, June 25, 2020).
The goals for the 2020-2021 school year includes decreasing obesity, increasing teen dating violence and aggression prevention, increasing substance abuse awareness and providing links to available mental health services.
The school system currently has 1 full time registered nurse supervisor, 12 full time LPN’s and 4 nurse PRN’s.
The school system was very active in 2019 regarding student health:
- 44,670 clinic visits by students (92 percent of students returned to class
- 1,526 chronic illnesses reported (several students had comorbidities or the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a patient)
- 2,339 Lions Club vision screenings (288 referred)
- 3,168 Lions Club hearing screenings (191 referred)
- 3,162 Body mass index screenings (191 referred)
Here are just a few of the numerous projects in 2019-2020 for the Cumberland County School System:
- All schools now have at least 3 AED’s (Automated external defibrillator) with Cumberland County High School and Stone Memorial High School each having 6.
- Narcan in all schools donated per Cumberland County Drug Coalition
- 177 students helped by the Second Harvest Food Collection
- Supporting Farm to School efforts – Stone Memorial High School, The Phoenix School and North Cumberland Elementary School bringing vegetables into the cafeteria grown in gardens.
- Walking trails planned for Pine View and Pleasant Hill Elementary School
- School nurses participating in virtual mental health workshops

- 50.8 percent normal
- 17.6 percent overweight
- 29.4 percent obese
- 2.2 percent underweight

- 17.9 percent overweight
- 26.4 percent obese
- 2.7 percent underweight
