NEWS FROM CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING – FEB. 9, 2021

The Crossville City Council met this evening. Here are highlights from the session:

STUDENT OF THE MONTH RECOGNIZED

The city council recognized the February student of the month, Martin Elementary 5th grader Triston Futrell. Triston is in Ms. Kim Stephens and Mr. Jeff Smith’s class. Both say Triston had a positive attitude, always willing to help others, is so kind, and is a joy to have in class. He always has a smile on his face and his consistently models respect to both students and teachers in his day to day interactions with them. The City of Crossville is a Community of Character partner and February is “Respect” month.

Crossville Mayor James Mayberry also presented a plaque to the January 2021 Student of the Month James Armstrong since there was no in person meeting last month.

MAIN STREET DOWNTOWN REPAVING UPDATE

City council members learned the downtown Main Street paving project has to go out for bid by the end of June 2021 or the city will miss out on $1.3 million in funding for the project. It included repaving, new sidewalks and lights for the section of road from near Lantana Road north to Neecham Street. The city council will work towards meeting the deadline at an upcoming work session.

AVIATION COMPANY REQUEST FOR HIGH SPEED INTERNET FOR AREA NOT SERVICED

The Crossville City Council talked about an aviation and aerospace technology company, Whisper Aero. City Manager Greg Wood said the business would need high speed Internet in the area they are interested in that is currently not serviced. Wood stated Ben Lomand Connect has agreed to cover 60 percent of the cost to provide it while the city cost is $27,500. Wood said there is enough money in from the Hotel/Motel tax to cover it. A motion was made, received a second and unanimously passed for the request.

TAX COLLECTION REPORT

The city took in $746,626 in sales taxes last month, according to a report presented to the council by city manager Greg Wood. This was the highest for a January since the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

Wood states the wholesale beer tax received for last month was $61,609. This figure as well as the highest for a January since the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Liquor income was $75,029.

The latest hotel occupancy tax collected was $7,934.

CROSSVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORT

The council reviews the Crossville Fire Department report for January 2021 in their meeting. It states crews responded to 4 fires, 180 rescue and emergency medical service calls and 8 false alarms. They issued 70 burn permits last month.
