STATE SENATE ADVANCES BILL GIVING D.C.S. MORE OVERSIGHT FOLLOWING ROANE COUNTY ABUSE CASE

A Tennessee Senate Committee voted unanimously yesterday to advance a bill preventing abuse related to a state adoption program. The legislation was proposed after details of a Roane County child abuse case emerged. The bill mandates some adoptive parents provide the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) with medical records or education verification to ensure the wellbeing of the child. State Senator Ken Yager filed the bill after learning Michael Gray Sr. and Shirley Gray allegedly cashed $36,000 a year state checks for adopting the very children they reportedly abused and killed one. The Grays are awaiting trial and face the death penalty if convicted.
