VOLKSWAGON HINTS AT BUILDING SECOND PLANT IN CHATTANOOGA

German media outlet, they are reporting that top officials at Volkswagen are considering building a second plant in the United States, right beside the current one, in Chattanooga, TN. However, there is nothing final yet. The article states that this move from Volkswagon is a reaction to recent events, including and especially Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as the global supply slowdown. VW officials tell the magazine that setting up a second plant in Chattanooga would reduce the company’s dependence on China, as well as strengthen its business in America.   The capacity in the USA could thus be expanded to up to 600,000 vehicles per year. In addition, the construction of a battery cell plant is also being considered, probably near the plant in Chattanooga.

The outlet quotes insiders as saying there is still no final decision. But, they say, weak sales in the U.S. are also factoring in. Volkswagen only garnered a market share of 2.5% in the U.S. last year. Their plant in Chattanooga currently employs 3,800 workers and has even started an electric vehicle line.
