MEIGS COUNTY OFFICIAL ACCUSED OF MISAPPROPRIATING MORE THAN $1 MILLION DOLLARS

The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office says the former director of the Meigs County Emergency Communications District misappropriated at least $1,084,188.60.

However, investigators say no charges are expected to be filed since the former director died in February 2021.

The Comptroller’s Office report says the former director falsified invoices from both real and fictitious vendors and then cashed district checks that were written to pay the fake invoices. They say this happened between July 2011 and February 2021.

In some instances, investigators say the former director forged the signatures of board members on checks. It also says they forged the signature endorsements of vendors to cash these checks.

The report says the former director also provided false budget-to-actual financial reports to the board. It says the reports excluded expenditures to hide the former director’s misappropriation and were meant to convince the board that the district’s spending was within budget.

Investigators say the former director received duplicate travel reimbursement and used work assets for personal use.
