REBUILDING COSTS INCREASE AFTER GATLINBURG WILDFIRES

Those residents in Gatlinburg who suffered structure damage in the November 2016 wildfire are discovering that it’s costing much more to rebuild than they expected. Contractors are saying that because of new code regulations put in place because of the fires, building is costing more time and money. They say that new buildings, including rental cabins, must be engineer-approved from the foundation to roof.  Insurance companies are also requiring that more expensive building materials be used in construction. Those new standards are driving prices 20-40 percent higher than what they were 20 years ago. Those costs are expected to be passed on to renters and tourists.
