POLICE PURSUIT ENDS WITH OFF DUTY SHERIFF ATTACKED ON I-40

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says a man is facing charges after he crashed his vehicle in Knox County and reportedly fought an off-duty sheriff.
The incident started on I-40 near Turkey Creek when 37-year-old Erwin Lanza of Gatlinburg reportedly struck other vehicles and hit a concrete barrier after a pursuit. It was witnessed by Loudon County Sheriff Jimmy Davis, who was off duty.
Davis approached the vehicle Lanza was driving to see if he was injured. Lanza got out and attacked Davis. Officers say Sheriff Davis sustained injuries to his head and ribs.
Lanza was charged with aggravated assault, DUI, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, and other traffic violations.
