VEC CREWS BATTLE ZERO TEMPERATURE AND ICE CONDITIONS TO RESTORE POWER TO OVER 10,000 CUSTOMERS IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

VEC power crews battled zero temperature and icy conditions early yesterday morning to restore power to just over 10,300 customers at one point in Cumberland County.

The outage started around 3 a.m. yesterday with a main transmission line failure.

Crews brought in a 105 foot tall bucket to work on the line supplying power to the Lantana substation. Officials say the wind chill of -5 degrees made repairs difficult.

At 6:40 a.m., the number of customers out dropped to 7,800.

At 8:30 a.m., the number jumped back up to 10,300 as crews completed repairs and started to restore power slowly to not overload the lines.

At 9:05 a.m., power was restored to all but around 50 scattered customers.
