11-YEAR-OLD CHARGED FOR MAKING SCHOOL THREAT

An 11-year-old student has been charged with threat of mass violence after an investigation into an incident that occurred on Tuesday at Vine Middle School.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 10, 2024, a Knoxville Police Department School Resource Officer responded to Vine Middle School to investigate a report that a student, since identified as an 11-year-old male, had made a school shooting threat.

Following a continued investigation assisted by Knox County School Security, KPD Violent Crimes Unit detectives responded to the student’s residence to conduct a home visit. No weapons were located during the home visit and detectives were told that the student did not have access to firearms.

After consulting with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office, the student was charged with making a threat of mass violence and was taken into custody on Tuesday evening.

The threat is not believed to be related to the other school-related threats circulating on social media.
