MAN ARRESTED FOR FELONY GUN POSSESSION

On Saturday, Deputy Benjamin Broderdorf observed a black Volkswagen Jetta traveling on Highway 70 North toward Mayland Road without tag lights. The vehicle turned off on Mayland Road, and that’s when the deputy initiated a traffic stop.

The car would stop at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Mayland Road. Upon contacting the vehicle driver, the deputy observed two other occupants in the front passenger and back seats.

The driver told the deputy that he didn’t have a license and was driving on a revoked license. The deputy asked him to step out of the vehicle and left the passengers in it. The man would be identified via state-issued ID as Dennis Binkley.

Binkley was asked if he had any weapons to which he responded he had two pocket knives and gave the deputy consent to remove them. While removing one of the knives from his right pocket, an orange needle cap fell out with it. That’s when the deputy asked Binkley if there was any contraband in the vehicle and Binkley said there was a pistol in the front door panel and that he was a convicted felon.

Binkley would be detained and the firearm, a sig 365, was retrieved. After checking whether or not the weapon was stolen, the other passengers were asked to step out of the vehicle one of whom was identified as Joey Stults who had a Failure to Appear warrant and was also placed into custody.

Stults informed the deputy that there was some methamphetamine paraphernalia inside his backpack in the backseat. The deputy took possession of the paraphernalia but did not charge Stults for it.

Binkley and Stults were transported to the Cumberland County detention facility. Binkley was charged with driving on a revoked/suspended license and possessing a weapon as a convicted felon.
