CROSSVILLE MAN BECOMES VICTIM OF POLICE IMPERSONATION SCAM

Yesterday, Deputy Jason Powers was called to the Justice Center Lobby to speak to an individual who stated that he had been on the phone with an officer from the Sheriff’s Office and was disconnected. He says he received a call from someone claiming to be an officer from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office but couldn’t remember what the man said his name was.

The victim told the deputy the man sent him pictures of a warrant that looked legit and had his information on it. The man then sent QR codes for a DOGECOIN kiosk. The victim was instructed to go to the kiosk to send money to avoid being arrested for the outstanding warrant.

He then went to the kiosk at the Marathon Station on West Avenue and sent $960.00 to the destination that the man had provided for him. He stayed on the phone with the subject until he arrived at the Sheriff’s Office and then lost connection or was disconnected.

The victim provided the deputy with screen shots of the warrant, QR codes, and receipt texts.
