CUMBERLAND COUNTY WOMAN BECOMES VICTIM OF BARCLAY VISA PHONE SCAM

On Wednesday at around 10:52 a.m., Deputy Brandon Griffin contacted a woman in the Justice Center lobby who said she had given her social security number, date of birth, and other information to a man over the phone who claimed to be an agent from her credit card company, Barclay Visa.

She said she received the call on Monday, saying a transaction had come through for $1,700 in Germany. They had locked our card and wanted her to sign up for a new one since that had been hacked.

She gave all her private information to sign up for a new card. But she said something didn’t seem right. So, she contacted Barclay Visa on Tuesday to see if it was truly them that had contacted her.

An agent with Barclay Visa stated that they did not contact her, and no transaction had occurred in Germany. They then asked her about a $400 purchase that had been flagged and asked if she had made the purchase, to which she denied.

Barclay Visa then canceled the card and told her to file a report.
