CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES NEW CELL PHONE POLICY

The Cumberland County School Board approved, 7-2, a new cell phone policy requiring students to store devices in school-approved systems during the school day to reduce distractions and misuse, such as filming fights or spreading misinformation.
The policy allows exceptions for educational purposes, emergencies, health needs, or disabilities. Unauthorized use leads to escalating penalties, from confiscation to detentions and daily check-ins.
The board debated storage options (e.g., locking pouches or classroom systems) and funding (general fund or parental contributions). Enforcement, staff accountability, and clear procedures were key concerns.
While approved, members of the board agreed the policy needs further refinement, funding decisions, and family communication before implementation.
