From McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy:

A McMinn County Sheriffs Deputy responded to a shots fired call in Riceville, and upon arrival engaged in a short gunfight with a suspect who is now in custody.

According to Sheriff Joe Guy, a McMinn Co Deputy arrived at a shots fired call in Riceville around 830pm this evening. As he arrived, a suspect began firing shots at the deputy.

“Our deputy returned fire as the suspect retreated into a residence,” says Sheriff Joe Guy. “Luckily, neither the suspect nor our deputy was struck. Additional officers arrived at the scene as the suspect was taken into custody and the suspect is now at the McMinn Co Jail.”

Sheriff Guy said the incident was isolated and involved only the suspect and the deputy.

“The incident is currently being investigated,” added Sheriff Guy. “This is yet another example of the dangers our local officers face.”

Sheriff Guy advised that additional details will be made public as the investigation continues.
