CUMBERLAND SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF ROMANCE SCAM

From the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office’s Director of Community Services and Criminal Investigation, Gary Howard:

“Recently, I spoke with a man in our community who almost fell victim to a romance scam. His story is one many can relate to, and it’s important to share.
This man had been widowed for a few years. Life at home was quiet, and the loneliness weighed heavily on him. Then, one evening, a message appeared on his social media:
“Hi, I hope you’ll write back.”
The profile showed a kind, smiling young woman. She said she was lonely too. She asked about his life, remembered little details, and even offered kind words about his late wife. Her messages came every morning and night. For the first time in years, he felt wanted.
But then it happened. She asked for help. Just a little money for rent, she said, with a link to send it.
His heart sank. Something didn’t feel right. When he refused, her tone changed. Sweet words turned cold, angry, threatening and soon her account disappeared.
The truth hit hard: she was never real. Her photos were stolen, her stories fake. She wasn’t looking for love—she was looking to scam him out of his trust, his identity, and his money.
Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Here in Crossville, we have seen hundreds of victims lose thousands of dollars—and in many cases, their very identities—to scams just like this.
We want you to know this: you are not alone. Scammers are experts at finding people in vulnerable moments. Anyone can be targeted.
If someone online is asking you for money, gift cards, or personal details—pause. Don’t click. Don’t send. And don’t be afraid to reach out for help.
Romance scams don’t care about your heart. But we do. Help us help you.
Before you click the link, or send the information, contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at (931) 484-6176. If you believe you may be caught in a scam, we are here to listen and to help. Our Fraud Unit is very knowledgeable and will take the time to listen without judgement.
