HARRIMAN RESOLVES DECADE-LONG LAWSUIT

At the Harriman City Council meeting on Tuesday evening, the council waived the agenda rule to address a decade-long issue involving a sinkhole at a property on South Roane Street, formerly the Hester Pawn Shop, and an adjacent building owned by Mr. Gilliam.
Both property owners had sued the city, alleging an underground water line caused the sinkhole, damaging their parking area and disrupting their businesses. City Attorney John Owings presented the final agreement, which the council approved. The terms grant the property owners 90 days to remove their belongings from their now-closed businesses.
Additionally, the purchaser of the property from Gilliam and Hester, who will transfer it to the city, was also granted 90 days. The city agreed to fix the sinkhole near a beauty shop adjacent to the former pawn shop, resolving the longstanding lawsuit.
The council also approved appointments to the new Temperance Building Committee to advance renovations for this city landmark.
No public comments were made during the 24-minute meeting.
