NEW WORK REQUIREMENTS ADDED TO S.N.A.P. BENEFITS

The Tennessee Department of Human Services has announced new work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), affecting able-bodied adults aged 18 to 64 without dependents. Starting soon, these individuals must work, volunteer, or participate in job training for at least 20 hours per week to receive SNAP benefits beyond a three-month limit within a three-year period, unless they qualify for exemptions.
Exemptions include those under 18, over 65, pregnant, living with a child under 14, caring for someone sick or disabled, receiving disability benefits, facing health issues, enrolled in school at least half-time, in a treatment program, or receiving unemployment benefits. Documentation for exemptions must be submitted by October 31 via the One DHS Customer Portal.
These changes stem from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed in July 2025, which also reduced SNAP funding by billions. Additionally, Tennessee has applied to modify its SNAP program to exclude sodas and include some prepared foods, aligning with other states seeking to restrict purchases of unhealthy items like soft drinks and candy. More details are available on the TDHS website.
