NEW UBER SCAM IN CIRCULATION

A new Uber scam is targeting riders through the app, where drivers contact them via in-app calls immediately after booking a ride, falsely claiming a need to “verify” the account due to a supposed new policy. Scammers request the rider’s phone number, email, and verification codes sent to their device, which, if shared, could grant full access to the account—including payment methods—enabling fraudulent trips or setting changes.
TikTok users have reported instances, such as a Vancouver rider whose driver grew frustrated and canceled the trip after she refused, insisting it was a “special verification for today.” Uber has investigated these complaints, confirming in responses that they never request passwords, verification codes, or banking details via calls, texts, or emails.
Riders are urged to end such conversations immediately and report them through Uber’s Help Center.
