CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will implement safety enhancements at the intersection of US 70 (SR 26) and SR 136, located west of Sparta in White County. This intersection, which has a history of high crash rates, will be converted to an all-way stop as part of a broader effort to improve safety in the area.

Installation is tentatively scheduled for Monday, December 1, 2025, weather permitting.

As part of the project:

• Speed limits on US 70 will be incrementally reduced as drivers approach the intersection.
• STOP signs will be installed on all approaches, converting the intersection to an all-way stop.
• Buzz strips and “STOP AHEAD” pavement markings will be added to alert drivers in advance.
• Solar-powered flashing beacons will be installed to enhance visibility.
• The existing overhead flashing beacon will remain in place, with White County converting the amber lights on US 70 to red to reflect the new stop conditions.

Flagging operations will be in place during installation, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Motorists should expect brief delays and are encouraged to use caution when traveling through the area.

Tennessee’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violation of this law can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
