CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL RESCINDS EMS REFERENDUM AFTER STATE RULES IT INVALID
The Crossville City Council held its regular meeting on December 9, 2025, with all members present.
During the meeting, council addressed a prior motion to place a referendum on establishing a municipal EMS service on the ballot.
The city attorney confirmed that state law does not permit municipalities to submit such a question to referendum, and the Tennessee Attorney General’s office affirmed that position.
A motion to petition the General Assembly for a private act that would allow the referendum required a supermajority (4–1) but failed on a 3–2 vote (Aye: Gernt, Mayberry, Crawford; No: Turner, Fox).
A subsequent motion to rescind the original invalid referendum motion then passed 4-1 with Mayor Crawford against, formally ending the effort.
