ELDERLY CROSSVILLE RESIDENT FALLS VICTIM TO CHECK FRAUD SCAM

An 86-year-old resident of Oak Crest Drive in Crossville reported a fraud incident to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on February 22, 2026, after discovering unauthorized transactions on her checking account at First National Bank.

The incidents began on January 8, 2026, when the victim received a postcard claiming she had won a $500 gift card and needed to pay shipping costs (she is uncertain whether she provided account details). On January 12, she received another message about winning a $2.5 million sweepstakes but did not share information for that offer. On January 27, a check for $7.95 payable to International Readers LLC was successfully deducted from her account. Subsequent attempts were stopped by the bank: a $3.99 check to Premium Benefits LLC on February 12; and on February 17, checks for $41.27 to Savers Club LLC and $39.95 to Doc Chat LLC.

The perpetrator remains unidentified (described as a non-resident, approximately 38 years old), and the method by which her account information was obtained is unknown. The bank has been notified and has taken protective measures. The report lists one check as stolen property, and a nearby resident is noted as a witness.
