GREEN COVE POND IN TELLICO PLAINS SET TO REOPEN ON SUNDAY AFTER MAJOR RENOVATIONS
Green Cove Pond, a popular trout fishing destination near Tellico Plains in Tennessee’s Cherokee National Forest, has completed a multi-year renovation project and is scheduled to officially reopen to licensed anglers on March 1, 2026. Originally constructed in the 1960s and last updated about 30 years ago, the pond had suffered from significant issues including heavy sedimentation that caused shallow water, low oxygen levels, and elevated temperatures—conditions that made it difficult for rainbow trout to survive and limited effective mid-season fishing. Erosion from wave action and water exposure had also severely damaged the sidewalk and pier foundations, rendering them unsafe.
The renovation involved removing over 500 cubic yards of sediment and replacing a broken water control valve to better manage water levels. These improvements have allowed for the addition of an expanded ADA-compliant sidewalk, dedicated ADA parking and picnic areas, a new floating fishing pier, and an extended trail that provides improved access around the pond.
Jason Henegar, Chief of Fisheries, expressed gratitude for the project’s completion and anticipation for enhanced angler access and excellent trout fishing in the years ahead. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, which oversaw the work, continues its mission to manage and conserve fish and wildlife resources while promoting public safety on Tennessee’s waterways.
