SWEETWATER POLICE CHIEF WARNS HB 2017 COULD PERMIT HUNTING AND GUNFIRE NEAR PUBLIC AREAS

Sweetwater Police Chief Eddie Byrum publicly expressed strong concerns about Tennessee House Bill 2017, which is scheduled for a vote in the Tennessee House of Representatives on Monday, March 16, 2026. The bill, which recently passed the Senate by a 24-7 vote, aims to prevent local governments from regulating the manner and means of lawful hunting, including where firearms can be discharged during hunting activities. This authority would instead be reserved exclusively for the state, specifically through rules and proclamations from the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission.

In a video shared on social media, Chief Byrum highlighted the potential safety risks, standing roughly 250 feet from Sweetwater High School’s gym to demonstrate how the change could allow legal hunting and shooting in close proximity to the school, a nearby greenway, a major subdivision (Willow Creek), and businesses along US Highway 11 (Main Street). He warned that gunfire near the school could trigger lockdowns at both the high school and junior high, disrupting education and creating unnecessary fear or emergencies in the community.

While affirming his support for the Second Amendment, Byrum emphasized that the measure would override local ordinances—some in place for over 100 years in Sweetwater—that have helped ensure public and school safety. He noted similar past concerns raised by the McMinn County Sheriff about reckless shooting incidents in rural areas that have damaged property or risked injuries.

The chief urged concerned Tennesseans to contact their state representatives to voice opposition, directing them to the Tennessee General Assembly website to find their lawmakers. The legislation stems from efforts to clarify state preemption over hunting regulations, including following incidents like a controversial duck hunting case in Sweetwater involving local enforcement.
