CUMBERLAND SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF “COURT ENFORCEMENT ACTION” SCAM

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent “Final Notice – Court Enforcement Action” letters that are being sent to citizens. These notices are made to look like official court documents, often referencing the State of Tennessee and courts in Davidson County. They falsely claim the recipient owes money for traffic violations, tolls, or fines, and threaten immediate enforcement action if payment is not made right away. The letters typically instruct people to scan a QR code or follow provided payment instructions to resolve the alleged violation.

These notices are not legitimate. The Sheriff’s Office stresses that real courts do not demand payment through QR codes, do not initiate official actions via unsolicited mailings of this kind, and do not threaten penalties without following proper legal procedures.

Residents are strongly advised not to scan any QR codes in suspicious mail, not to provide any personal or financial information, and to verify any claimed legal issues directly with the appropriate court using official contact information found on government websites. Any such incidents should be reported to local law enforcement. The scam relies on creating a sense of urgency and fear to trick victims into sending money or handing over sensitive information.
