U.T. POLICE DEPARTMENT MOURNS PASSING OF SGT. PHIL WHALEY

The University of Tennessee Police Department is mourning the loss of Sgt. Phil Whaley, who passed away this morning after a courageous battle with cancer. He joined the university on August 25, 2001, as a Community Service Officer and became a sworn police officer on August 4, 2003, after completing the law enforcement academy. Over his more than two-decade career, he advanced to the rank of Sergeant, where he led with integrity, humility, and a strong commitment to his colleagues and the campus community.

Sgt. Whaley was widely respected for his dedication as a public servant. In 2024, he received the Life Saving Award for his heroic actions during a critical incident, in which he provided life-saving measures and safely pulled an individual in crisis to safety. He consistently demonstrated professionalism, fairness, and empathy in every situation, going above and beyond to support students, mentor younger officers, and engage with the broader community.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sgt. Whaley was remembered most for his personal qualities—his warmth, sense of humor, genuine care for others, and his role as a trusted friend and steady source of encouragement. His passing represents a profound loss for the department and the entire University of Tennessee community, leaving a void that will be deeply felt for years to come. The department honors his lasting legacy of service, friendship, and compassion, and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
