TENNESSEE ATTORNEY GENERAL FINALIZES $7.4 BILLION SETTLEMENT WITH PURDUE PHARMA

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has announced the finalization of a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, concluding nearly a decade of legal action regarding their role in the national opioid crisis. This comprehensive agreement, supported by 55 attorneys general, resolves claims that the company used aggressive marketing tactics to fuel widespread addiction. Following a 2024 Supreme Court ruling that required renegotiation for more substantial funds, the settlement now mandates that the Sackler family permanently exit the U.S. opioid market and release over 30 million internal documents for public scrutiny.

The financial relief from this settlement will be distributed over the next 15 years to fund addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery efforts nationwide. Tennessee is set to receive $122.4 million, bringing the state’s total secured opioid settlement funds to over $1.3 billion. A significant portion of these payments is being disbursed immediately, with the bulk of the remaining funds scheduled for the first three years. Furthermore, the settlement effectively dismantles Purdue Pharma; its manufacturing operations have been transferred to a new entity, Knoa Pharma LLC, which will operate under independent oversight and is strictly prohibited from marketing opioids to the public.
