MORGAN COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD VOTES TO CLOSE PETROS-JOYNER ELEMENTARY AMID ANGRY PROTESTS

In Morgan County, Tennessee, the School Board voted to close Petros-Joyner Elementary School, sparking heated emotions and protests from parents and community members. The decision followed a failed budget vote and came during a tense Thursday meeting that included a call to order, the budget vote, and adjournment. Parents criticized the board for disrupting children’s education and the local community, while board members defended themselves, insisting the closure was an unwanted but necessary step. Emotions escalated to the point where officers were asked to intervene as board members urged each other to de-escalate.

Principal Laura Bunch, a former kindergartner at the school and now its final principal, expressed frustration that faculty had not been adequately consulted or supported during the process. Staff members described feeling uncared for and invisible. The closure affects 157 students and more than 30 staff, with Petros-Joyner being the only school targeted despite limited feasibility studies on other facilities. Concerns also arose in the community about a possible sale of the building to a board member, which the board chair firmly denied.

Board members attributed the closure largely to chronic underfunding by the state legislature and governor, noting Tennessee ranks last in per-student spending. Critics highlighted a lack of compassion and long-term planning, despite the issue being discussed for three years. Students will have the option to choose their next school for the coming year.
