WATTS BAR NUCLEAR UNIT 1 RETURNS TO FULL OPERATION AFTER MAINTENANCE OUTAGE

The Tennessee Valley Authority’s Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 1 returned to operation after completing a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. During the outage, the team safely performed 11,000 work activities, including loading the reactor core with all 193 fuel assemblies (76 of them new), conducting detailed system inspections, replacing or servicing equipment, and installing enhancements to boost long-term reliability.

The unit is now positioned to generate enough electricity to power at least 650,000 homes for the next 18-month operating cycle. Watts Bar site vice president Chris Reneau praised the collaborative efforts of TVA, union, and contract workers, noting that the upgrades will support growing regional power demand while delivering safe, reliable, and affordable energy.

Watts Bar Unit 1 is one of seven nuclear reactors operated by TVA, which maintains the third-largest nuclear fleet in the nation. The fleet provides approximately 40% of the electricity used by nearly 10 million people across the Tennessee Valley.
