OLIVER SPRINGS COUNCIL DEBATES PROPERTY TAX HIKE IN PROPOSED BUDGET

The Oliver Springs Town Council held its second regular monthly meeting on Thursday, May 21, with the primary focus on reviewing proposed budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

Corey Jenkins presented four budget options to the council, which included potential property tax increases ranging from 8 cents to 22 cents per $100 of assessed value. Without any tax increase, the town could be forced to eliminate one police officer position and a proposed street department position, while also forgoing capital projects to balance the budget.

Council members plan to hold another work session on May 26 to discuss the water department budget before advancing toward a final decision. A public hearing will precede the first reading of the budget, which could occur during the council’s first meeting in June.

Although no new business items were on the agenda, Mayor Jason Stiltner addressed resident concerns regarding a proposed ordinance on fees for certain city park uses, clarifying that it remains only a proposal and will undergo further discussion. The mayor also congratulated Justin Bailey on his recent appointment as assistant fire chief for the Knoxville Fire Department, praising his service to the town.
