Freddy (Fred) Thomas Jernigan, age 78, went home to be with the Lord on June 5, 2026, at Overton County Health and Rehab in Livingston, TN, due to complications from dementia.

He was born on November 23, 1947, in Monterey, TN, to Thomas H. Jernigan and Thelma Robinson Jernigan. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1966 and entered the military. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970 including one tour of duty in Vietnam. He was heavily involved in the Tet Offensive of 1968 in Saigon. After leaving the military, he worked in security systems owning his own company. He went on to work in several manufacturing jobs. He belonged to the VFW Post 6277 in Monterey, TN, where he served as commander for 2 terms. He also helped in the construction of the building, served in the honor guard and participated in many fundraising events. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 29 1/2 years, Joan Castle Jernigan of Monterey, TN, one son, Darren (Michelle) Jernigan of Old Hickory, TN; two sisters, Betty (Rev. Eugene) McCowan of Monterey, TN, and Brenda (Laddie) Wilson of Gallatin, TN; one brother, Teddy (Carolyn) Jernigan of Cookeville, TN; 4 step grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Jernigan Howard of Monterey, TN.

Burial will be on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Whittaker Cemetery, Monterey, TN. There will be a Celebration of Life Service following the burial at 1:00 PM at Second Freewill Baptist Church, 855 E. Commercial Avenue, Monterey, in the Fellowship Hall. Rev. Eugene McCowan will officiate.
