SPARTA MAN FACES MOUNTING FELONY CHARGES FOLLOWING REPEATED ARRESTS IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

A Sparta man is facing a long list of severe criminal charges in Cumberland County following a series of incidents between November 2025 and February 2026 involving domestic violence, drug possession, kidnapping, and repeated bond violations.

Court documents reveal that James Franklin Wagoner was bound over to the Cumberland County Circuit Court, where a hearing date was set for July 14, 2026, with bond established at $32,500. His charges include Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Methamphetamine, and multiple counts of violating bond conditions and orders of protection.

According to affidavits from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the violent spree began on November 15, 2025. Authorities responded to reports of an ongoing domestic dispute near Taylors Chapel Road and Old State Road.

Deputies reported that Wagoner allegedly struck a female victim multiple times with a white PVC pipe during an argument over a flat tire, leaving severe injuries on her head, back, and arms. When the victim attempted to escape to a nearby residence and flag down a passing vehicle for help, Wagoner allegedly grabbed her and forced her back into his truck, continuing the assault.

Upon arrival at the residence, Deputy Jordan Winningham commanded Wagoner to stop and take his hand out of his pocket. When Wagoner refused and continued walking away, the deputy deployed a taser to gain compliance, resulting in Wagoner falling into a glass door before being taken into custody for resisting arrest and aggravated kidnapping.

Less than a month after the initial incident, on December 8, 2025, Wagoner was stopped by deputies on Hebbertsburg Road for vehicle equipment violations. During a search, deputies discovered a glass straw with burnt residue and approximately 21.9 grams of a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine inside his watch pocket. He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and felony possession of methamphetamines.

Despite existing orders of protection and active bond conditions barring him from contacting the victim, Wagoner was apprehended on two subsequent occasions:

  • January 22, 2026: A traffic stop on Sparta Highway revealed the prior female victim riding as a passenger in Wagoner’s vehicle, violating active bond conditions and an order of protection.

  • February 7, 2026: Deputies responded to a 911 call on Oak Crest Drive, where they found an intoxicated Wagoner standing in the middle of the road shouting at the female victim, leading to another arrest for violating bond conditions.

Wagoner’s case is being handled by the Public Defender’s Office as it moves through the Cumberland County court system.
