Sam Neill, the versatile and suave actor whose prolific career spanned art house cinema and Hollywood blockbusters, has died at the age of 78.

According to a statement shared on the actor’s social media page, Neill died “suddenly and unexpectedly” on Monday in Sydney, surrounded by his family. While Neill had previously revealed a diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2023, the family confirmed he “remained cancer free” at the time of his passing. A specific cause of death was not disclosed.

Neill was a pivotal figure in the wave of Australasian talent that captured global attention beginning in the late 1970s. After starring in New Zealand’s landmark 1977 film Sleeping Dogs, he achieved international breakthrough roles alongside Judy Davis in Gillian Armstrong’s My Brilliant Career (1979) and opposite Nicole Kidman in the thriller Dead Calm (1989).

His remarkable range allowed him to seamlessly transition between complex dramas, horror, and major blockbusters. Memorable roles included:

• Dr. Alan Grant in the multi-billion-dollar Jurassic Park franchise.

• Dr. Weir in the cosmic horror film Event Horizon.

• Alisdair Stewart in Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning drama The Piano.

• Damien Thorn in Omen III: The Final Conflict.

Born Nigel Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, he moved to New Zealand at age seven, adopting the name “Sam” while in school. Over a career spanning five decades, he earned a reputation as one of the screen’s most dependable and elegant leading men.

Reflecting on his signature role as paleontologist Alan Grant years after first taking the part, Neill once noted he had finally figured out how to portray an action hero: “He’s gnarly and grizzled, but he looks like he knows what he’s doing.”
