George Vernon McPeters, Jr., 82
George Vernon McPeters, Jr., of Wartburg passed away July 14, 2026 at his home. He was born April 20, 1944 to the late George McPeters, Sr. and Helen Greene McPeters.
George was a man of many traits and talents. His adventurous spirit drew him to the mountains of Frozen Head, where he found solace and inspiration among the winding trails and majesty of nature. Not only did he tread those paths with joy, but he also gave voice to the beauty he beheld in words, penning a heartfelt poem about our great park. His love for the outdoors reflected his appreciation for life’s simple and profound pleasures.
Beyond his connection to nature, George’s passions ranged wide. His fascination with airplanes and racing especially NASCAR ignited a lifelong enthusiasm for sports and machinery. Books and writing formed another foundation of his life; he found both comfort and challenge among the pages he read and the words he wrote, always eager to learn and share stories.
Faith was central to George’s life. As a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Wartburg, he found fellowship and spiritual guidance, giving quietly and consistently to those around him. His steadfastness in faith served as an anchor for himself and his community.
George’s dedication spilled over into his work, where he committed four decades to Union Carbide, now known as Y-12. Even after retiring, his passion for meaningful contribution led him to Centrus Technology, where he worked for an additional ten years. He took great pride in his work and cherished the camaraderie of his colleagues. His industrious spirit and unwavering reliability left an indelible mark everywhere he served.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Jim McPeters.
He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Griffith McPeters; children Melissa (Brian) Bingham, Alan (Janet) McPeters; grandchild Madelynn McPeters; siblings Nathan McPeters, Rodney (Vicky) McPeters, Iris Greer, Steve McPetes, Bill (Georgeann) McPeters, and Jane Price. And a host of extended family and friends and special neighbors whom he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 17, 2026 at Schubert Funeral Home from 2:00-3:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Paul Frick and Bro. David Acres officiating.
