Local officials have temporarily halted all new data center and cryptocurrency mining operations to protect local resources and preserve the area’s rural character.

During a Tuesday, July 21 meeting, the Rhea County Commission voted unanimously to enact an immediate moratorium on the construction, development, and operation of these high-energy facilities. Sponsored by District 7 Commissioner Jacob Ellis, the temporary pause is designed to prevent rapid industrial expansion from outpacing the county’s infrastructure.

The motion to approve the measure was introduced by Commissioner Mark Cashman and seconded by Commissioner Nick Welch.

“Growth is inevitable, but losing our community’s identity is not,” Ellis stated, emphasizing that the pause gives county leaders time to study potential strain on local power grids, water systems, roads, and emergency services.

During the moratorium, the Rhea County Regional Planning Commission will evaluate potential environmental and utility impacts. Their goal is to establish clear performance standards and ensure any future commercial projects align with local capacity while safeguarding the community’s quality of life.

The Commission is scheduled to meet next for a workshop session on Tuesday, Aug. 11, followed by its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Both meetings begin at 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Phil Swafford Building.
