18-YEAR-OLD ACCUSED OF POINTING GUN IN PARK BASKETBALL DISPUTE HEADS TO CUMBERLAND COUNTY COURT

An 18-year-old Crossville man faces criminal court proceedings following a tense altercation at Centennial Park that allegedly saw a firearm pulled on parkgoers after a basketball game.

Rylan Lane Norton is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on July 30, 2026, on charges of aggravated assault stemming from the March incident.

According to reports from the Crossville Police Department, officers were dispatched to Centennial Park around 7:55 p.m. on March 9, 2026, after receiving calls that a man was pointing a handgun at people near the basketball courts. Witnesses and victims told police that a verbal dispute escalated after a game, leading the suspect to brandish and rack a pistol, threatening several individuals as they attempted to leave.

The suspect fled the park as a passenger in a silver Toyota Camry before officers arrived. Investigators used vehicle descriptions and license plate details to track the car to Parkside Place. While a initial search of the vehicle yielded no weapon, officers later located Norton at a home on Lee Drive.

Norton denied having a gun during the argument, claiming the confrontation was strictly physical and verbal. However, a consent search of his bedroom turned up .40 caliber ammunition. Later that night, officers discovered a discarded black Taurus G2C 9mm handgun in the woods near Parkside Place. Business surveillance footage showed a male matching Norton’s description making tossing motions into the wood line shortly after the incident, and law enforcement records confirmed the handgun’s serial number matched a firearm previously linked to Norton.

Norton was arrested at the scene, booked into the Cumberland County Justice Center, and originally held on a $10,000 bond. He is represented by attorney Howard Upchurch, with Officer Jared South serving as the prosecuting officer.

All charges and allegations are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
