HEAVY DELAYS ON I-40 IN PUTNAM COUNTY AS DUAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS CAUSE MAJOR BACKUPS

Motorists traveling along Interstate 40 through Putnam and Cumberland counties are facing major traffic congestion as ongoing bridge repairs and emergency road maintenance choke traffic down to a crawl.

The primary driver behind the persistent delays is a massive, multi-year bridge repair project spanning between Mile Marker 304 and Mile Marker 306 in Putnam County. Construction crews working within the median have shifted traffic lanes and blocked both the Eastbound and Westbound right shoulders. The project, which began earlier this year, is scheduled to keep shoulders closed through December 20, 2027. Transportation officials warn that construction vehicles will be frequently entering and exiting the work zone, and drivers are strongly urged to exercise caution and stay alert.

Compounding the congestion, a short-term maintenance project nearby is creating an additional bottleneck for Westbound travelers. Contractors are currently patching a severe pothole in the slow lane near Mile Marker 306 in Cumberland County. The repair work has reduced Westbound I-40 down to a single open lane, with the right lane completely closed. This lane restriction will remain in place through Thursday, July 30.

Drivers heading through the area should expect significant travel delays, stay mindful of reduced speed limits, and consider taking alternate routes if possible until maintenance crews clear the area.
