TDOT TO SUSPEND ALL ROAD CONSTRUCTION LANE CLOSURES FOR LABOR DAY HOLIDAY TRAVEL

Motorists hitting the road for the Labor Day holiday can expect smoother travels across Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced a complete halt to lane-closure activity on all interstates and state routes to maximize roadway capacity.
The suspension will begin at noon on Friday, September 4, and continue through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8.
  • Safety Focus: TDOT Commissioner Will Reid emphasized that pausing construction aims to keep traffic moving while protecting both travelers and roadside workers, including HELP Truck drivers and first responders.
  • Active Work Zones: Although lane closures will be lifted, workers may still be present on-site. Drivers must obey posted speed limits. Speeding in active work zones carries fines ranging from $250 to $500, plus court fees and potential insurance rate hikes.
  • Traveler Tips: Officials remind drivers to avoid distractions like texting or calling while driving.
Travelers can monitor real-time traffic conditions and access live-streaming SmartWay cameras online at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic or by dialing 511 before heading out.
