The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially declared the multistate Cyclospora outbreak over, concluding an event that sickened 12,883 people across 21 states, with Virginia newly added to the final tally.

The outbreak, which primarily involved processed iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico and recalled by Taylor Farms de Mexico on July 17, affected consumers at multiple locations including Taco Bell. While the vast majority of illnesses began prior to the recall, health officials continued logging cases through late August. The Food and Drug Administration maintains that all recalled product has been successfully cleared from the market.

Although the public health emergency has concluded, the FDA’s investigation remains active. Onsite inspections and sample collections at growing and processing facilities in Mexico have wrapped up, though laboratory analysis on those samples is still pending. Federal and international regulators will transition ongoing prevention efforts to a newly established post-outbreak response page as investigations continue.
