Health Risks
E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing bacterium that can lead to severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. While many healthy individuals recover within a week, infections can sometimes trigger hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe kidney complication, particularly in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers are urged to check their freezers immediately for the affected products. Anyone in possession of these items should not consume them and should either discard the product or return it to Walmart or Trader Joe’s for a full refund.
