DOE INVESTS $581 MILLION IN TVA GRID PROJECTS TO BOOST CAPACITY AND LOWER ENERGY COSTS

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a major $581 million funding initiative in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to upgrade transmission and distribution infrastructure across eight states, including Tennessee.
The initiative combines $250 million in federal funding with approximately $331 million in applicant cost-share funding to support 84 critical infrastructure projects. Key highlights of the investment include:
  • Increased Capacity: The projects are projected to add roughly 2.5 gigawatts (2,500 megawatts) of grid capacity to reduce outages and improve network resilience.
  • Broader Impact: Combined with TVA’s previously selected SPARK project, total planned grid investments approach $741 million—incorporating about $330 million in federal support—which will ultimately expand capacity by over 4,300 megawatts.
  • Community Benefits: Reliable, secure power will be delivered to an estimated 2.58 million homes and businesses while supporting roughly 800 jobs.
“These investments with TVA will help reduce congestion, improve efficiency, and make better use of our existing transmission system to lower costs for ratepayers,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy James P. Danly.
Federal officials emphasize that the upgrades are essential for preventing the electrical grid from becoming a bottleneck to economic growth, aiming to streamline energy delivery and reduce costly outages for local utilities. Final project scopes, schedules, and funding agreements remain subject to regulatory reviews, environmental assessments, and finalized DOE contracts.
