MONROE COUNTY STANDOFF ENDS IN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING AFTER SUSPECT THREATENS OFFICERS WITH RIFLE
An hours-long standoff on Glenlock Road ended late last week when a special response officer shot an armed suspect who threatened law enforcement with an assault-style rifle, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began on Friday, October 16, 2026, at approximately 3:15 p.m., when Monroe County Dispatch received an emergency call reporting an armed man threatening family members after firing a shot inside a residence. While family members tried unsuccessfully to de-escalate the situation, they safely evacuated and contacted 911.
Monroe County deputies and Sweetwater police officers arrived at the scene to secure the perimeter and help remaining family members escape. Due to the volatile nature of the call, Sheriff Jim Kile requested assistance from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and the Madisonville Police Department Special Response Team.
Authorities attempted to negotiate with the suspect for several hours as he refused commands to drop his weapon and exit the home. The standoff reached a critical point when the suspect pointed an assault-style rifle and threatened the safety of officers on the scene. A Madisonville Police Department officer subsequently fired their weapon, striking the suspect.
Law enforcement officers immediately administered lifesaving measures at the scene before the suspect was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.
Per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in the state, Sheriff Kile handed jurisdiction over to the Tenth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. District Attorney Stephen Hatchett has requested that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) lead an independent inquiry into the shooting.
Further updates and inquiries regarding the ongoing investigation are being handled by the TBI.
