TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES MAJOR WIDENING PROJECT FOR INTERSTATE 75 IN LOUDON COUNTY
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has unveiled plans to expand a 3.35-mile stretch of Interstate 75 in Loudon County, moving the heavily traveled corridor from four lanes to six lanes to alleviate chronic congestion and improve overall traffic operations.
The upcoming infrastructure initiative, spanning from Exit 81 to the I-40/I-75 junction, is rooted in projects originally identified by the 2017 IMPROVE Act. To minimize taxpayer costs, construction timelines, and disruptions to surrounding property owners, state planners intend to confine all road widening to the inside of the existing lanes toward the median. This approach is expected to result in minimal to no right-of-way impacts.
Key Project Enhancements
-
Capacity Boost: Addition of a third travel lane in both the northbound and southbound directions.
-
Exit 81 Upgrades: Realignment and widening of both northbound and southbound on- and off-ramps at the interchange with US 321.
-
Smart Technology: Expansion of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) along the corridor to monitor traffic flow and enhance safety.
Timeline and Funding
-
Current Status: Under development.
-
Estimated Construction Start: Fiscal Year 2027, according to TDOT’s 10-Year Project Plan.
-
Completion Date: To be determined (TBD).
-
Funding: TDOT anticipates partial funding for the undertaking to be drawn from the state’s Transportation Modernization Fund.
State officials will release further details regarding traffic impacts and construction milestones as development progresses.
