Crossville Police investigated the report of a utility bill being paid with counterfeit bills last week. Friday, officers were called to Volunteer Energy where 50-year-old Jeffrey Scott Hutsell tried to pay a bill using five counterfeit $20 bills. All of the bills had the same serial number and when Hutsell was notified that the money was fake, he reportedly paid the bill with real money and then fled the scene. Contact was later made with Hutsell who said that he had no idea the bills were counterfeit and that he received them from a man and woman who bought some of his prescription drugs. A neighbor of Hutsell’s also told police that he received a fake 20 from Hutsell in a transaction. Charges are pending.
