A RIOT AT TROUSDALE TURNER CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

A riot broke out at Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility in Hartsville, TN, around 10 p.m. Sunday, prompting a response from over 100 officers from multiple agencies, including Sumner, Wilson, Macon, Smith, and Tennessee Highway Patrol. Inmates reached the main yard but were contained within the facility’s fences using tear gas, with no escapes reported.
Three guards were briefly held hostage but released without major injuries. A head count and injury assessment are underway. The riot’s cause, security breaches, and staffing levels remain unclear.
This is the second incident at the facility this weekend, following an assault on a correctional officer Saturday, who remains hospitalized. Trousdale Turner, a private prison run by CoreCivic, has a history of issues, including a federal investigation since August 2024 into living conditions, with reports of stabbings, assaults, murders, and sexual misconduct.
The facility has faced scrutiny from state audits and the NAACP, with nearly 70 complaints in six months. The warden resigned in March, and CoreCivic’s contract expires in a year.
