ACCIDENT ON PEAVINE LEADS TO DUI, METH, AND RESISTING ARREST CHARGES

On August 8, 2025, at approximately 4:50 P.M., Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a minor vehicle accident at a Peavine Road Dollar General in Fairfield Glade.
Officer Jacob Van Trump, along with Corporal L. Janow and Officer J. Nash, were dispatched following a third-party report of an intoxicated male, later identified as James Edgar Vandever, who had backed his 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche into a 2018 Toyota 4Runner. Vandever exhibited slurred speech, uncooperative behavior, and signs of intoxication, including the odor of alcohol detected by Corporal Janow. After refusing to exit his vehicle and resisting arrest, Vandever was forcibly removed, handcuffed, and placed in a patrol unit.
Due to his unsteadiness and uncooperative nature, field sobriety tests could not be conducted, but evidence including an empty Tito’s Vodka bottle and Vandever’s behavior supported his arrest for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). During booking, a small bag containing 0.3 grams of methamphetamine was found in Vandever’s wallet, testing positive for meth/amphetamines.
A blood search warrant was obtained, and two vials of blood were drawn at Cumberland Medical Center. Vandever was charged with DUI, Resisting Arrest, Simple Possession of Methamphetamines, and a citation for Financial Responsibility Law due to failure to provide proof of insurance.
Evidence, including the methamphetamine and blood vials, was secured, and Vandever was booked into Cumberland County Jail with a court date set for September 8, 2025.
