ACCIDENTAL GAS PRICE OF 45 CENTS PER GALLON BRINGS TN GAS STATION OWNER “ON THE VERGE OF TEARS”

An East Tennessee gas station owner was “on the verge of tears” after unknowingly charging customers some of the lowest fuel prices of any gas station in the country.

One customer, Henry Dehart of Chattanooga, noticed the pricing was wrong when he filled up his gas tank with 12 gallons of premium gas and saw it would only cost a total of $5.64, according to Yahoo News.

Dehart wrote in a Facebook post on April 14 that the discount would have been welcome if it wasn’t clearly a mistake with the average cost for a gallon of gas being over $4 and the price of premium gas being over $4.64 in Tennessee.

The owner was not made aware of the issue until Dehart brought it to his attention and it was clear he was upset after finding out he had been undercharging fuel for more than a few hours.

“There’s no telling how much money he lost today. He was on the verge of tears,” DeHart said.

Gas station owners make a slim profit on gasoline sales, usually about 10 to 15 cents on the gallon, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores. And rising prices impacted gas station owners, as customers become less likely to buy snacks and drinks or other in-store items, which are more profitable than gasoline.

“What I find most frustrating about this is that this man with the guts to own a small business would get screwed over by people for half of [the] day,” DeHart said.  DeHart added, “How many people this morning thought, it’s my lucky day, while this man was getting taken to the cleaners?”

Not everyone was happy that DeHart had brought their lucky day to an end, he said indicating a man in line behind him made that clear.  DeHart said he paid what he should have owed. Although it was not enough to cover the expenses lost, DeHart said it felt like the right thing to do because the owner, “had already taken such a beating.”
