MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE – Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong announced a 33-year-old South Carolina man was taken into custody in Knoxville Tuesday for his involvement in a shooting in Blount County early Sunday morning.

The shooting victim, a 31-year-old Knoxville man, is listed in stable condition at an area hospital.

On Tuesday, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Smoky Mountain Fugitive Task Force arrested Antonio Dowan Bennett-Tate, 32, of Spartanburg, South Carolina at a residence in Knoxville. After arrival at the Blount County Correctional Facility, deputies served warrants on Bennett Tate for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He was released earlier today on bonds totaling $50,000 pending a hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court at 1:30 p.m. May 15, 2023.

Sunday morning, deputies responded to the call of a shooting that occurred at a residence on Mentor Road. When deputies arrived, they located the male victim inside the residence who was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken by AMR Ambulance Service to an area hospital for treatment. The case was turned over to BCSO investigations, and during the course of their investigation, investigators learned that the shooter fired numerous shots into the residence from outside, striking the victim as he slept in a bedroom. Investigators uncovered evidence that led them to Bennett-Tate as the suspect in the shooting. The U.S. Marshals Service Smoky Mountain Fugitive Task Force located Bennett-Tate in Knoxville Tuesday evening and took him into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
