A Fentress County school is one of at least two in the state whose students will not receive ACT scores taken in October. Those testing at the Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute in Jamestown and at Bearden High School in Knox County, were notified by the ACT Board that those students would receive vouchers to retest. The main problem that students and parents cited was the fact that they were informed of the problems just weeks before most college scholarship deadlines and that students relied on their ACT scores for that reason. In a notice sent to students from Bearden High School, officials said that the test would not be scored “due to circumstances beyond our control.” The notice went on to say, “ACT has decided that they cannot guarantee the validity of the test given at Bearden High School on this state testing day because the wrong tests were sent to the Bearden High School and administered to BHS students. Because of this, ACT is offering senior students vouchers for any ACT National Test day.” Although many at both schools have been advocating that the scores be issued, state education officials say that “ultimately the decision lies with the ACT Board.”
