The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis for only the second time in its history, warning that severe shortages have reached a critical point and are directly threatening patient care across the country.

Blood donations have plunged to a four-year summer low, driven by a wave of extreme heat, poor air quality, and widespread foodborne illnesses that have suppressed donor turnout. The situation is particularly dire for type O blood; supplies of type O positive have fallen below a single day’s supply, forcing the Red Cross to limit distributions to hospitals nationwide.

Despite an uptick in donors following an initial emergency announcement earlier this month, the influx has not kept pace with urgent medical demand.

“This summer has brought a number of unique challenges that have placed additional strain on our blood supply, creating growing concerns for hospitals and the patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions,” said Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of donor services for the Red Cross. Sullivan noted that if just three additional donors attended every blood drive this summer, the shortage could be reversed.

To encourage immediate donations, the Red Cross is offering incentives for volunteers:

• Through July 31: Donors will receive a Fandango movie ticket by email (up to a $15 value).

• August 1–31: Donors will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email.
