AREA JAILS FACING INMATE OVERCROWDING PROBLEMS

Jails in the listening area are either overcrowded or close to capacity setting up numerous problems for county officials. Sheriff Tim Guider said the Loudon County jail has double the inmates it can house. The only women’s block in the facility has 13 beds but currently has 50 female inmates. The Roane County jail is designed to hold 170 but has over 260 inmates incarcerated. Officials say moving inmates to other neighboring county jails is not an option because almost all other jails are full and that it could cost almost $40 a day to house an inmate at another county. Also, an over capacity jail puts more strain on corrections officers. Officials at the Cumberland County jail told 105.7 News this morning that their facility can hold a maximum of 220 inmates. As of this morning, 212 were in the Cumberland County jail.
